The general objective of this course is to introduce students to methods of research. This introduces the basic philosophy, concepts and tools of conducting scientific inquiry enabling students more confident and competent in doing research and using research results in their specialist areas. The proposed research course has two separate but closely related components - research principles and research skills applications. Further students need to learn how research is used to support management decision making. While qualitative research is just introduced, a considerable portion of the course is focused on designing and implementing social science research through surveys. A key output of the course is the students’ ability to produce a quality research proposal, which could be used as research proposal for the second year, second term research study. Although the course focuses on research design, basic statistical analyses using the SPSS software will also be covered.
